What are Hallmark Smileboxes?

I recently got one from my cousin (well a few actually) and I just wanted to know what a Smilebox is? Like there's this one nasty picture (and I KNOW that its not her picture) and is it like a trademark or something? and there are only 3 pictures on it whats up with that? So really, what are they?
